The Chicago Bulls are starting small to close the regular season — and it’s exactly the style of play that defensive specialist Alex Caruso prefers.Caruso moved into a smaller starting lineup after the Bulls signed fellow defensive guard Patrick Beverley on Feb. 21. The pair displaced second-year point guard Ayo Dosunmu and third-year power forward Patrick Williams, who held down a lengthier starting lineup for the opening two-thirds of the season. At the time, coach Billy Donovan ascribed the change as a necessity to start games with experience and defensive versatility. And Caruso believes the lineup has allowed him and Beverley to set an immediate defensive pace for the Bulls.“I like it just because I get to have a little impact right away on the game,” Caruso said. “I’m able to set the tone in that way.”It’s rare for defensive specialists such as Caruso and Beverley to play on the court at the same time as a player so uniquely simil...Bruins notebook: Patrice Bergeron pumps up his teammates

Garnet Hathaway has been a Bruin for a little over two weeks, but he’s come to appreciate Patrice Bergeron’s skills as a captain even more than he expected to.And his estimation went up even more on Saturday. The B’s were down 2-0 to the Detroit Red Wings and not playing very well when Bergeron, who would score the eventual equalizer, gathered his teammates and refocused them. From that point on, the B’s marched their way to a 3-2 victory.“He brought us together. He’s a great leader,” said Hathaway, who scored the third period game-winner. “We lean on him a lot and I think it’s a huge testament to how he is and his character. You look around the room and you see guys of high character working hard for each other.”What was Bergeron’s message?“What can we change? We know we can change, and what are we going to do?” responded Hathaway. “We can’t change the two goals that went in, so what can we alter to get back in the game? And just take ...Civil rights law group pushes against use of police, metal detectors in schools

He was vintage Chris Sale on Saturday afternoon. One pitch to get the first out, one pitch to get the second. He gave up a single to Twins infielder Donovan Solano, then struck out Kyle Farmer.Eight pitches, inning over.He sat them down 1-2-3 in the second inning, striking out the first two batters, then faced the minimum again in the third, striking out the first and third batters.Three innings, one hit, no walks, five strikeouts. 32 pitches, 25 for strikes. If not for the Solano single, a perfect outing.Sale worked so efficiently that he ended up throwing a mock inning in the bullpen after leaving the game, as a means of building pitch count. His manager was pleased.“Really good,” Alex Cora told reporters after the game. “Used all of his pitches, he was very sound, mechanics-wise. It was a good one and now we move onto the next one.”The Twins won, 4-3, dropping the Sox to 9-2 in spring training games. It turns out, Sale’s impeccable outing was motivated ...Colin McIver’s hat trick powers Sandwich past Nantucket
