Elvis Andrus was hitless in his last 14 at-bats since collecting the 1,999th hit of his career Friday in Houston.“It’s very tough when you are right there and you are about to accomplish a milestone,” Andrus said Wednesday. The Chicago White Sox second baseman had a big smile and raised his arms after reaching the 2,000-hit mark with a fifth-inning single to right against San Francisco Giants starter Logan Webb.It was one of 13 Sox hits in a 7-3 victory in front of 15,980 at Guaranteed Rate Field.“It’s a great achievement,” Andrus said. “It’s a lot of hits. It’s a lot of memories. Every hit means a lot, from the first one to 2,000 today. It means a lot for me and the family and the people who have helped me through my career.“I’m not going to lie: I wanted to get this hit in Houston. My family was there, but just the way it goes. Sometimes it gets a little harder, but thank God I did it and helped the team win. It was ...Playoff implications of Nets’ final 3 games

The Nets are mathematically eliminated from the East’s No. 5 seed.Even if they win each of their final three games, starting with Wednesday’s matchup against the Detroit Pistons, the NBA’s tiebreaker rules are clearly defined.Three straight wins for the Nets and three season-ending losses for the fifth-seeded Knicks would tie the city’s two pro basketball teams at 46 wins and 36 losses apiece. When that happens, the team with the better head-to-head record claims the higher seed. The Nets and Knicks, of course, are tied in their season series at 2-2.Assuming the Nets also beat the Philadelphia 76ers in the season finale, the city’s two teams would also be tied in their division record at eight wins and eight losses each, the next set of tie-breaking criteria to establish playoff pecking order. Here’s where the Nets draw the short end of the stick: better record against teams in the playoffs or tied for a playoff spot. The Knicks have an 18-16 record...Boston city councilors clash over redistricting records request

Boston City Councilor Erin Murphy said her colleagues’ decision to block her request for internal communications in the city’s ongoing redistricting saga was not only unprecedented, it was immature and unprofessional. But Ricardo Arroyo, co-sponsor of the redistricting map, and one of the six councilors who opposed Murphy’s request on Wednesday, said the move amounted to nothing more than “political theater,” as the emails she’s seeking can easily be accessed by contacting the city’s public records officer.Murphy’s request, which was defeated after the council deadlocked in a 6-6 vote, was for a copy of the 5,816 pages of redistricting correspondence sent between all 13 councilors and Wayne Yeh, policy director for Councilor Liz Breadon, previously obtained by Attorney John Lyons, per a public records request. Some of the emails shared with Murphy, which she submitted along with the request she filed with the City Council, appeared to point to open meeting law violations in the fraugh...Toy gun confiscated on school bus in Hopkinton; incident comes as ‘Orbeez Challenge’ on TikTok continues

Parents: Be on the lookout for toy guns, local officials say.A school bus in Hopkinton had to evacuate Wednesday morning when the driver recognized a student had a toy that resembled a “real weapon,” district officials said in a letter to parents.Police, along with middle and high school administrators, responded to the scene, and students in the back of the bus were “patted down and the contents of their bags were also searched by HPD officers.”Police confiscated the toy gun, officials said. They did not disclose the product’s brand and make, and the investigation remained ongoing Wednesday afternoon.Hopkinton is not the only municipality across the region that has seen recent instances of children possessing and using toy guns.Canton Police Chief Helena Rafferty issued a stern notice to her community Monday, saying gel ball blasters, often referred to as ‘Orbeez guns,’ are prohibited on all town property and businesses, particularly at the library and on fields, school property an...Southbridge educators ‘condemn’ administrators’ response to firearm incident

A video of a gun in school — and the hunt for that weapon — has teachers hitting the alarm. The Southbridge Education Association is alleging “monumental failures” by the district leadership in handling the report of a student who had a firearm on the middle/high school campus in March.“To date, there has not been a full accounting of the events that led to an arrest and left our students and school staff exposed to a serious threat for several hours,” the union wrote. “There also has been no effort to assess how to better handle situations that threaten the lives of our students and staff.”The incident in question took place on March 13 when a student posted a video in a Southbridge Middle/High School bathroom with a gun, according to the union’s account.Superintendent Jeffrey Villar — who was appointed by the state to oversee the district after it went into receivership — and school administrators were notified of th...Highest-rated Chinese restaurants in San Diego for 2023, according to Tripadvisor

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — The Arizona Coyotes appeared to have finally found an answer to their arena issues by working out a deal to build an entertainment district in Tempe.A snag with the city of Phoenix now puts that in doubt, adding another layer to the franchise’s long-running bid to find a permanent home. The Coyotes and the firm the franchise hired to develop a new arena project near Sky Harbor International Airport filed a $2.3 billion notice of claim against the city of Phoenix on Wednesday for alleged breach of contract. The claim, a precursor to a lawsuit, that was filed along with Bluebird Development is seeking damages from Phoenix for a legal filing by the city March 27. Phoenix asked in its legal filing to rescind Tempe’s recent zoning and land-use changes, along with prohibiting future residential considerations in an area the FAA says is incompatible with residential development. The city and Sky Harbor said the plan for the Tempe Entertainment District, which w...Latest news
