SANTA CLARA — The Cincinnati Bengals have ascended to a power position in the AFC in part because coach Zac Taylor paid close attention to the 49ers.The Bengals are 3-3 and like the 49ers have knocked on the door of winning a Super Bowl championship in each of the last two years without getting the ultimate payoff.Taylor, 40, was a surprise hire in 2019 in that his only stint as an offensive coordinator was in 2015 with Miami, having taken over play-calling duties for the last five games after Bill Lazor was fired. Before joining the Bengals, Taylor was the wide receivers coach for the Los Angeles Rams in 2017 and quarterbacks coach for a team that advanced to the Super Bowl under Sean McVay in 2018.While with the Rams, Taylor watched the NFC West rival 49ers closely. After they went 6-10 in 2017 and 4-12 in 2018 following quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo’s torn ACL, the 49ers took off in 2019 and went 13-3.In Taylor’s first two seasons in Cincinnati, the Bengals were 2-...Hive mind project nets scholarship for Campbell teen

Busy as a beeAnna Yang, 18, of Campbell is among 21 Davidson Fellows Scholarship Program winners for 2023. Yang, a freshman at Stanford University, won a $10,000 scholarship for her project, Smart Bee Colony Monitor: Internet of Things Device and Fusion Convolutional Neural Network for Queen Assessment.A beekeeper for five years, Yang learned that Colony Collapse Disorder often occurs because the queen dies or is unable to reproduce, and that experienced beekeepers can determine whether the queen is alive purely by the sound of the hive. She used this knowledge to build a WiFi module equipped with sensors to capture data inside and outside the hive to determine whether the queen is present and healthy. The Davidson Fellows Scholarship program offers $50,000, $25,000 and $10,000 college scholarships to students 18 or younger, who have completed significant projects that have the potential to benefit society in the fields of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, literature and ...New Museum Los Gatos taking submissions for high school art show

The fall exhibit at De Anza College’s Euphrat Museum of Art has a personal connection for museum director Diana Argabrite. “Facing Home,” set to open Nov. 1, includes an installation by her late mother, Edith R. Argabrite.“She was a 55-year resident of Sunnyvale who passed in January this year,” Argabrite recalls. “She was a Holocaust survivor, Jewish, born in the Czech Republic.“The work being featured is an installation of a couple hundred ascending felted nest sculptures. In her kinder class there were over 2,200 children, but only about 25 survived. Her goal was to make 2,200 nest sculptures to represent resting places for those classmates who didn’t survive. The nests are colorful and playful; there is a sense of hope in spite of the history.”The installation is one of several in “Facing Home” that explore what constitutes a sense of home or refuge and honor the passing of loved ones central to the concept of home.“What She Left Behind,” a 16-foot-tall dress installation ...After record season, women’s college basketball returns with stars Reese and Clark set for encore
