Opinion: The time is now to trade Justin Fields

Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields' stock has never been higher than it is right now, and if the Bears don't see him as the long-term answer under center, as the saying goes, it is best to strike (a deal) when the iron's hot.Fields is coming off his second straight four touchdown performance after Chicago dismantled the Washington Commanders, 40-20, in their own house Thursday night. Waking up Friday morning, Fields was tied for the NFL-lead in touchdown passes with fellow NFC North quarterback Kirk Cousins (11) and stood sixth overall in passing yards on the season (1,143) — ahead of folks like Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen and Justin Herbert in both categories.Quarterback play is king in today's NFL, and Fields' meteoric rise over the last two weeks puts the Bears in a precarious position, one where they are poised to trade, quite possibly, the first player in the history of their franchise that possesses multi-pro bowl caliber talent at the quarterback position.Chicago sports ...Rebuilding Together helps St. Louis-area homeowners in need

Gov. Gavin Newsom on Saturday vetoed a bill that would have removed criminal penalties for using and possessing small amounts of hallucinogens, including psilocybin “magic” mushrooms and the cactus-derived drug mescaline. The bill, which would also have decriminalized the psilocybin mushroom extract psilocin and the psychoactive compound dimethyltryptamine, or DMT, would have eliminated criminal penalties for using specific quantities of the drugs for people 21 and older.“Both peer-reviewed science and powerful personal anecdotes lead me to support new opportunities to address mental health through psychedelic medicines like those addressed in this bill,” Newsom wrote in a letter to state senators, who three weeks ago passed the bill, SB 58. “Psychedelics have proven to relieve people suffering from certain conditions such as depression, PTSD, traumatic brain injury, and other addictive personality traits.”Newsom promised California would lead on a...JonBenet Ramsey murder probe soon to get fresh eyes

A long-awaited review of the JonBenet Ramsey murder investigation by the Colorado Cold Case Review Team, with the cooperation of the Boulder Police Department, is set to take place before the year’s end.The decision to submit the case to outside review coincided with the reassignment of a detective who had long held primary responsibility for its investigation.Boulder police said Thursday that the November 2022 reassignment of Commander Thomas Trujillo had no connection to the Ramsey case. It did, however, generally coincide with the department’s agreement — just after Trujillo’s reassignment — to welcome greater involvement by other investigating agencies. Trujillo was assigned to the detective bureau at the time of JonBenet’s December 1996 murder. He was one of two lead detectives on the perplexing case throughout much of its duration. On Nov. 1, 2022, Trujillo was moved from the Investigations Unit to the Watch 3 Patrol after an internal probe into the Investigat...Men’s basketball: Young CU Buffs bigs taking advantage of Eddie Lampkin injury absence

Lampkin is on the mend and still targeting a full return ahead of the Nov. 6 opener at home against Towson, but the youngsters behind him are getting an extended look as the Buffaloes continue working through preseason workouts.“I think combining class and practice. Practice is way harder. You’re playing with better dudes. That’s the biggest change from high school to college. But I th...California city considered ‘greenest’ US city of 2023: study

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) — Clemson coach Dabo Swinney always felt connected to the late, great Tigers coach Frank Howard. Both are Alabama natives and Swinney met Howard as a young boy when the longtime coach came to a birthday party for Swinney’s mom. Now, Swinney’s joined Howard as Clemson’s leader in career victories with 165 after a 17-12 win over Wake Forest on Saturday. “I don’t think that’s a coincidence,” Swinney said Saturday of his history with Howard. “Hopefully, I’m here a long time and we win many more games,” Swinney continued. “But Frank Howard is Clemson.” So far, the 53-year-old Swinney’s made a strong run to overtake that legacy. Cade Klubnik and Will Shipley ran for touchdowns and Clemson’s defense held Wake Forest in check throughout .It was far from a pretty performance on a picture-perfect day. Still, Clemson (4-2, 2-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) won its 15th straight over Wake Forest (3-2, 0-2) and posted a second-strai...No. 14 North Carolina in full control with Maye accounting for 4 touchdowns in 40-7 win over Orange
